Description
This introduction to mental health nursing focuses on caring for clients experiencing acute and chronic
psychiatric illnesses across the lifespan in a variety of clinical settings. The course emphasizes
development of students’ self-awareness,therapeutic communication, professional behaviors, and
understanding of ethical/legal issues in the provision of competent nursing care to mental health
clients. Emphasis is placed on utilizing strategies that promote optimal psychological and emotional
well-being. Health promotion, principles of evidence-based practice, pharmacology, and nutrition are
integrated throughout the course.
